Joshua Redman Trio: The Village Vanguard

on April 19, 2012

The Joshua Redman Trio, featuring bassist Matt Penman, a member with Redman of the band James Farm, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, kick off a week’s residency at the Village Vanguard in New York City Tuesday night, with multiple sets to follow each night through Sunday, April 22.

The New York Times recommends the shows. "Joshua Redman has lately put his tenor and soprano saxophone to work in the context of James Farm, a superarticulate postbop quartet, with strong direction from all four of its members," writes Times music critic Nate Chinen.

Ottawa Citizen: Redman, Mehldau simply excellent

on June 28, 2011

Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau performed the first of two shows at the National Arts Centre Studio in Ottawa Monday night as part of the Ottawa Jazz Festival. The two " produced music of uncommon depth and simpatico," says the Ottawa Citizen's Doug Fischer in his review of the concert, titled "Redman, Mehldau simply excellent."

"It's enough that the two musicians are among the towering figures of jazz over the past two decades," writes Fischer. "But they are also longtime friends, compatriots who share the musical ideals and sensibilities of their generation.

JazzTimes: James Farm Is a Very Cool Album

on May 23, 2011

James Farm—the collaborative band featuring Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman, and Eric Harland—released its self-titled debut album April 26 on Nonesuch Records.

"Joshua Redman, one-fourth of the new collective band James Farm," writes JazzTimes' Thomas Conrad in his review of the new album, "has always belonged to a select group of jazz musicians able to attract a broad audience without dumbing down the art form. The basis of this gift is mysterious, but probably has something to do with always telling stories and communicating the joy of playing music."

James Farm at Portland Jazz Fest: Nothing Tentative

on February 28, 2011

James Farm—Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman, and Eric Harland—performed at the Newmark Theater on Sunday as part of the 2011 Portland Jazz Festival.

"Summertime it wasn’t but that’s the way the show began, with one of Gershwin’s major contributions to the Great American Songbook, reports Oregon Music News' Jack Berry. "'Summertime' was the first and last tune most people in the large and ready to roar audience had ever heard before. All four members of the band are composers and there was nothing tentative about the original creations.
