    A Fine Salute From SFJAZZ

    By Mike Joyce
    The Washington Post

The SFJazz Collective will never be accused of repeating itself. Since its founding in 2004, the ensemble has toured every year with a different program of original material (new pieces composed by each member of the octet) and fresh arrangements of tunes written by a jazz legend. Led by saxophonist-artistic director Joshua Redman and featuring the great vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, the group celebrated Herbie Hancock's legacy at the Music Center at Strathmore on Wednesday night. Three Hancock tunes, all arranged by Gil Goldstein, colorfully evoked distinct facets of the pianist's remarkable career. "And What If I Don't" slyly recalled Hancock's early soul-jazz recordings, while "Tell Me a Bedtime Story," a long-line ballad and one of Hancock's loveliest themes, was closely modeled after the original recording, with Hutcherson's vibes substituting for the bright sheen of Hancock's electric piano. "Actual Proof" was the most surprising and imaginatively orchestrated Hancock offering, an acoustic portrait of his jazz-fusion days with the Headhunters. Still, nothing proved more stirring than the original tunes. They carved out plenty of room for Redman, who smoothly doubled on tenor and soprano; Hutcherson, whose playing was as fluid as ever; and their exceptionally gifted band mates: pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, alto saxophonist-flutist Miguel Zenon, trombonist Andre Hayward, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland, who nearly stole the show with his anthemic contribution "Triumph." Payton's "Sodoku" was another treat, a delightful puzzle marked by wide intervals, tart harmonies and alternating bursts of swing and tension.
