Joshua Redman Quartet Embarks on Summer Tour

Joshua Redman, fresh from a set at the Playboy Jazz Festival with The Bad Plus, embarks on a tour with his Quartet, featuring pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, beginning with two sets at Kuumbwa Jazz in Santa Cruz, California, tonight. From there, the group gives two performances at Jimmy Mak’s in Portland, and then takes up a four-night residency at Jazz Alley in Seattle, followed by three nights at DazzleJazz in Denver. The tour moves east for sets at the Elkhart Jazz Festival in Indiana and Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Finally, Larry Grenadier swaps in for Reuben Rogers as the Quartet holds a six-night residency at the Blue Note in New York City, June 28–July 3, to close out the Blue Note Jazz Festival.

“Redman has consistently raised his own creative bar,” says the Denver Post in a preview of the tour. “Expect smart and melodic contemporary music from these performances.”

Redman and a different Quartet—pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Jorge Rossy—will tour Europe in July, including stops in Croatia, Germany, Czech Republic, and Spain.

See below for all of Redman’s currently scheduled summer Quartet shows; for more dates, including a fall duo tour with longtime friend and label mate Brad Mehldau, visit the tour page.

Nonesuch released The Bad Plus Joshua Redman last year. The Guardian gives it four stars, calling it an “imaginative collaboration.” The New York Times calls it “a knockout,” and NPR exclaims: “[T]he real triumph of The Bad Plus Joshua Redman: It exhibits genuinely fresh thinking … a roaring and beautiful summit meeting.”
