NY Times: "Walking Shadows" Redman's Most "Sublimely Lyrical" Album Yet

Joshua Redman will be joined by longtime collaborators and close friends Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Brian Blade on drums for a performance of music from his new album, Walking Shadows, at The Town Hall in New York City this Tuesday, June 4. The artists, all of whom perform on the album, which Mehldau produced, will share the stage for the 2013 Blue Note Jazz Festival with the New York-based orchestra The Knights. The New York Times music critic Nate Chinen recognizes the concert as "a rare thing" and "an early highlight" of the festival.

"Melody is always paramount for the saxophonist Joshua Redman, to a degree that sets him apart from his postbop peers," Chinen writes in his preview of the concert. "Still, there hasn’t been a more sublimely lyrical gesture in his 20-year recording career than Walking Shadows (Nonesuch), an album that sets his tenor and soprano against a string orchestra, in tremulous but thoughtful new arrangements."

Walking Shadows includes original tunes from both Redman and Mehldau along with works by a wide range of composers, like John Mayer and Pino Palladino, Kern and Hammerstein, and Lennon and McCartney.

"Mr. Redman approaches each performance with a dry, focused intelligence," Chinen goes on to say. "His rhythm section ... brings a lot of shared history to the table, and it shows."
