Eclectic jazzman Redman goes back to basics

The Joshua Redman Trio—featuring bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson—launches a four-night run at Jazz at the Bistro in St. Louis Wednesday night. In advance of the concerts, Redman is the subject of a profile in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"Jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman could never be accused of standing still artistically," writes the Post-Dispatch's Calvin Wilson. "Redman earned critical kudos for his 2007 album, Back East, whose title cleverly nodded to the classic Sonny Rollins trio album, Way Out West. On his latest disc, Compass (2009), Redman ups the ante on some tracks, interacting with two basses and two drummers in what he calls a 'double trio.'"

Previewing the more traditional trio sets in store for Jazz at the Bistro, Wilson suggests that the "music is likely to be as ambitious as it is accessible." He places Redman "among the most celebrated jazz artists to emerge in the 1990s" and notes that, all these years later, "Redman continues to be the rare artist who combines jazz credibility with mainstream popularity."
