Joshua Redman Reaches "New Levels of Prowess" in NYC "Walking Shadows" Concert (NY Times)

Joshua Redman performed songs from his new album, Walking Shadows at The Town Hall in New York City Tuesday night as part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival. He was joined by the core ensemble from the album, longtime collaborators and close friends Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Brian Blade on drums, as well as the New York–based chamber orchestra The Knights. The New York Times music critic Nate Chinen, who had previously described the album as the most "sublimely lyrical gesture" of Redman's career, writes in his concert review that the event "was, objectively speaking, a special night," calling Walking Shadows a "luxurious, calmly ambitious" work.

"Since the mid-1990s, when he was an ascendant new leading man whose energetic working band introduced Mr. Mehldau and Mr. Blade," Chinen writes of Redman, "he has stood for a notion of jazz that’s rigorous and porous, edifying and approachable, dying to prove nothing beyond its own quality of expression. And the concert ... was a radiant embodiment of that ideal."

The review goes on to exclaim: "Mr. Redman has always been a fluid technician, but the inner glow in his tone throughout the night, along with the grace and clarity of his ideas, suggested new levels of prowess ... His sound was dry and mellow, impeccably controlled."

Joshua Redman has joined his bandmates in James Farm—pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland—for the BMW Jazz Festival in Brazil this weekend, performing at HSBC Brasil in São Paulo tonight and Vivo Rio in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.
