Joshua Redman Thrilled to Be Part of 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors

On Sunday, December 8, 2013, Joshua Redman joined a group of jazz all-stars onstage at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, to pay tribute to honoree Herbie Hancock in performance. The Kennedy Center Honors program recognizes recipients for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts; in addition to Hancock, this year’s honorees included Martina Arroyo, Billy Joel, Shirley MacLaine, and Carlos Santana.

Actress Glenn Close described honoree Herbie Hancock as a “Chicago prodigy who loved playing Gershwin and loved taking risks—exploring music’s far frontiers and becoming our very own Jazz Master-in-Chief.” Television host and political commentator Bill O’Reilly described Hancock’s innovative musical and his spirit drive to bring humanity together through music: “His fame and skill reflect the values that have made America great … hard work … creativity … respect for yourself and others. Herbie Hancock rebelled against the status quo in music; he never rebelled against humanity.”

At the gala, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and Terence Blanchard opened the performance segment of the evening with the standard “Walkin’” and Hancock’s own “Watermelon Man.” Next up, Joshua Redman joined Wayne Shorter, James Genus, Aaron Parks, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Michael Bearden, Vinnie Colaiuta, Teri Lyne Carrington, and Lionel Loueke to perform “Cantaloupe Island.” Another band celebrated Hancock’s influence with performances of “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)” and “Rockit,” including Marcus Miller, DJ Mix Master Mike, and Snoop Dogg joining in with a special rap written for the occasion. All of the musicians united together for the upbeat finale of “Chameleon.”

The Kennedy Center Honors celebration gala and performances will be broadcast on CBS on Sunday, December 29, starting at 9 PM ET/PT.
